报告摘要:

These are a series talks on the original representation theory of finite groups. In 1896, Frobenius defined irreducible characters to decompose a group determinant into linear factors. Frobenius's definition of characters is totally different from our usual ones which is defined as the trace of an irreducible representation. In fact, this trace version of characters is due to Schur.

In the first talk, we will review the definition and properties of characters defined by Frobenius. Then we will introduce some applications of these properties in modern theory. In the second talk, we will review the definition of L-characters and its affect on group structure. A potential application to VOA is also included in this talk. In the last talk, we will collect some results seeing characters as points in affine variety. This point of view maybe lead to representation theory without matrices.

报告人简介:

王立中,北京大学数学科学学院教授,研究方向为有限群及其表示论, 特别是模表示与块论, 取得了若干重要的研究成果, 应邀在一系列国内外重要学术会议上做报告, 主持和参与多项国家自然科学基金重点项目和面上项目,多次到德国和美国等国做学术交流, 并参与组织若干国内和国际代数学与群论等学术会议。
